InfantSEE
Did you know that it is recommended that children have their first eye exam between the ages of six months to twelve months? InfantSEE is a program sponsored by the American Optometric Association in which participating eye care providers will perfom a FREE eye exam on infants between those ages. Most parents do not realize that eye exams are recommended for children this young, but many childhood vision problems can be detected very early. The sooner a problem is detected, the easier it is to fix, and the less likely it is that the child will have lasting vision problems. You can visit www.infantsee.org for more information.
You may be wondering how it is possible to do an eye exam on a child so young. There are many different tools and tests that can be used to determine things like eye aligment, eye muscle function, prescription, and overall eye health that do not require a response from the patient. A complete eye exam can be performed at this age.
What to expect: When you bring your child in for an infant exam, you will first fill out some paperwork asking questions about the child and about your pregnancy. You will then go back with the doctor who will play some games with the child to help make them comfortable, and perform some simple tests that the child will probably even enjoy. Once the tests are completed, the child's eyes will be dilated so that a complete health check can be performed. Most children cry intially when the drops are administered, but don't seem to be bothered by them afterwards.
We would love to be able to help take care of your little one's eye health. Call us to set up a FREE exam today, and remember to mention InfantSee!
